Should the U.S. Government be concerned with Terri Schiavo?
This article on CNN made me angry. Here are some of the choice quotes by some unnamed author (update: several writers share the blame - CNN's Ted Barrett, Bob Franken, Joe Johns, Bill Mears and John Zarrella contributed to this report):
Schiavo's parents have fought to have the feeding tube restored. They argue that their daughter never made such a right-to-die declaration and that she would not want to be, in their words, "starved to death."
"In their words?". What other words would you use to describe a process where nourishment is withheld from someone?
As I read further, I may have found the answer.
Felos told CNN that Terri Schiavo appears "peaceful" and "is in her dying process." She is going through what "millions go through during their death process," he said.
"In her dying process". That is such a natural and beautiful thing, isn't it? What Felos forgot to mention about all those starving millions, is most of them reside in Africa.
With all the talk about how wrong it is for the federal government to intercede on Terri's behalf, Rush Limbaugh said something very powerful. Unfortunately I don't have a transcript and I can't remember exactly how he said it. He was discussing this issue with a libertarian who was complaining about the federal government interfering in this process when Rush reminded him that the federal court system is also part of the federal government. Rush didn't approach this issue as a political football, and didn't express concern over any "dangerous precendent" that might be set. His point of view was that this was a human who was about to starve to death, and politics be damned.
Our Declaration of Independence states:
"We hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain alienate rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness."
So the question of whether or not the government should be involved in this case was answered 229 years ago.
Judge Greer, The Supreme Court of the United States, and many other goverment officials, will have blood on their hands if Terri Schiavo dies.
